Prophet’s Rock Retrospect Pinot Noir 2017

The Retrospect as Paul describes is his ‘Anti reserve wine’ i.e. the wine is a more elegant style as opposed to most reserve wines being bigger, more extracted, more oak. He also specifically releases it much later than all the other wines, giving both trade and private collectors the chance to purchase a wine with bottle age direct from the wineries cellar. It come’s one specific plot in the Home vineyard where the chalk/pedogenic limestone is only 50cm down, the shallowest top soil parcel in the vineyard

Same winemaking as Home Vineyard Pinot Noir. Wild Ferment in open top fermenters. Pigeage – Just one for the whole of the fermentation. Sometimes before finishing just mixes the ferment, putting hose through cap into the wine. Just no need to extract more. Elevage – 30% new barrel – 17 months approx. Bottled unfined unfiltered

“The bouquet of this wine reminds me of Burgundy because of the earthy, layered, mineral and floral combinations. The wine is also still incredibly youthful, poised and fruit centric on the palate with red and black cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and a whisper of plum. Poised, vibrant, nervous and still developing with a long intense finish. Decant for service, drinking best from late 2021 through 2029” – 97 Points – Cameron Douglas

“Aromas of fresh tobacco, blueberry, violet and spice, as well as red cherry. This is very resolved and there’s a nice balance between the savory and fruity notes. The palate has quite a bold, fleshy feel with impressive intensity of fruit and soft, layered tannins. Blueberry and damson flavors hold long and impressively fresh. Drink or hold” – 96 Points – Nick Stock –
