BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2018
Bottle Shot

This wine was first produced in 2005, a blend of all the vineyards. So currently the 9ha of Deserti and a small amount of Rennina and Sugarille. Wine making as described above however elevage for this wine is a little different to the other two single site wines. After primary ferment is completed the wine spends the first six months of its life in 2yr or older French oak Tonneau. They use no new oak for any of the wines. After this period the wine is moved to large format Slavonian oak Botti for the remainder of the two years required by the DOCG rules. After this the wine is then moved to concrete for 6-12 months before it is bottled. This wine is the instruction to their Brunello wines, a little fleshier in fruit and softer in tannin and designed to an earlier drinking style and approachable on release.

RENNINA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2018

While released like a single vineyard wine, it is actually a blend of three non-adjacent vineyards that surround the winery. First produced in 1994 from a total of 10ha, the vineyards all face south/south west and are on soils with a higher component of calcareous-clays. The major difference in winemaking here is after ferment the wine goes straight into larger format 3000L old oak. The name Rennina pays homage and reference to the history of the estate and is a blend of Latin and Etruscan words and indicates parish or church owned land. The wine is not produced every year and if not released as Rennina all will go into the Brunelle di Montalcino. A little more austere and structured than the Brunello di Montalcino. This along with the Sugarille is built to age 20-30 years. A little more fruit forward than the Sugarille the family describe it as their parallel to Barbaresco.

“Complex, wild and energetic with an intellectual array of fresh truffles, bramble berries, bark, cardamom, dried porcini, miso and rosemary. Full-bodied yet agile, with firm, tight tannins and sharp acidity. Powerful and tight. Needs a few years to open. Try after 2025.” – 96 Points – James Suckling

If Rennina is the Barbaresco, this is the Barolo of the pair. More austere, tighter and tannic with the grip to go with it, takes a little longer to come around. This is 4.5ha single vineyard south facing site, consisting of clay and limestone with galestro. Elevage is the same as Rennina and first produced by the Gaja’s in 1995. Again will not be produced in every vintage if they deem the typicity of the vineyard is not showcased and will then be moved into the blended Brunello. The name is derived from the name originally given to parish estate dating back to 1547 and is now the name of the wine and the single vineyard.

“Aromas of red plums, sour cherries, spice box, oranges, cloves and capers. Moss and porcini, too. Beautifully open, with a medium to full body and very fine, silky tannins. Lovely purity of fruit here, with a long, seamless finish. Ethereal and transparent. Drink from 2024.” – 96 Points – James Suckling
