Wiston Estate

Goring Family

The Wiston Estate has been owned and managed by the Goring Family since 1743. Its 6000 acres straddle the chalky slopes of the South Downs. Sussex Beef herds, grazing sheep and arable crops have been part of the Estate landscape for centuries. Pip Goring, the current custodian was the visionary to plant 16 hectares of vineyards and focus on producing world class sparkling wines in 2006.

No expense has been spared to achieve this goal. The Goring family approached Dermot Sugrue who at the time then winemaker at Nyetimber to take on the challenge of creating Wiston. Nyetimber of course is credited with putting English Sparkling wine on the map internationally. Wiston acquired a traditional Coquard press, one of only 4 outside France and is unique to the UK. It’s large surface area and exceptional gentle pressing enables extraction of the very highest quality. They also use barrels exclusively from Jacques Prieur after he has being ‘seasoning them’ with Puligny Montrachet for 5 years.
