Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint Romain Rouge Sous Roche 2021
$177.00
Sous Roche is the foundation red wine of Domaine Buisson, the partner to the Sous Velle white. It’s a 60year-old, 3ha plot full of limestone and ironstone that faces Saint-Romain village, on the opposite slope to Sous Velle. Facing west, it captures warm afternoon sun but its high elevation (average 360m) lends it ahigh-altitude freshness. Most of the site was massale selection plantings by Henri Buisson in the 1960s.
The vineyard saw a relatively high yield in frost-prone 2021 as it’s west-facing slopes meant that not as many buds were affected by the frost. The older vines also proved more resistant to mildew and oidium during the wet early part of summer.
This saw slightly more whole bunch than Buisson’s other reds, as it usually does, approaching 40%. It was aged in various oak vessels.
“Noticeably fuller purple and a little more body to the bouquet, thus more in fruit than flowers. Clearly more density here, then a mix of white pepper from the whole bunch and the marginal ripeness of the vintage. Finishes very well for all that. Drink from 2025-2028.” – 88-91 Points, Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy)
