Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay 2024
$791.00
Arguably Italy’s most iconic Chardonnay, and one of Angelo Gaja’s most quietly radical decisions. Planting Chardonnay within the boundaries of Barbaresco in 1979 was unthinkable at the time. Named for Gaia Gaja, Angelo’s daughter, and Clotilde Rey, his grandmother, the wine draws from two vineyards, Giacosa in Treiso and Rivette in Serralunga d’Alba, each bringing its own character. Rivette provides acidity and structure, Giacosa fragrance and balance. Fermented and aged entirely in barrel for 18 months, full malolactic fermentation.
Sweet and generous on the nose, with apricot, mango, white flowers and honey lifted by fresh calcareous nuances. The palate is warm and full, beautifully balanced between richness and vibrancy, with a long, savory finish and well-integrated oak.
