NATURAL / BIODYNAMIC WINERY OF THE YEAR- New York International Wine Competition 2015 Huia is a certified Organic artisan winery based in the Wairau valley created in 1990 by Claire & Mike Allan. They utilize traditional organic and biodynamic practices over the 35-hectare estate and winery. All the wines are produced from their own vineyards and all the fruit is handpicked. The estate vineyards are certified organic and are in Demeter biodynamic certification. Vegan and vegetarian friendly, the Huia wines are a benchmark for Organic aromatic wines from Marlborough. Huia is named after a unique New Zealand bird and the feather on their label is a nod to their core values of dignity, wisdom and belief.
“Botrytis became evident in some bunches during the few weeks prior to harvest. We left the grape bunches,on the vine to become fully botrytised and de-hydrate. The grapes for this wine were harvested with plenty of very dry botrytis on 18th May. The hand harvested grapes were crushed by feet in the press and then left overnight in the press to re-hydrate. Pressing was carried out the next day using a gentle pressing champagne cycle. The wine fermented in a stainless steel tank for a long cool ferment” – Clare Allen – Owner
