Mewstone + hughes & hughes
Mewstone Wines has quickly become one of Tasmania’s most exciting wine producers, gaining widespread recognition for their exceptional wines. Located on the picturesque banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, in Tasmania’s southernmost wine-growing region, the vineyard has achieved remarkable success in just a short time. However, this rise to prominence wasn’t overnight—it’s the result of years of hard work and dedication.
Founded by brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes in 2011, Mewstone Vineyard sits south of Hobart, directly across from Bruny Island. The inspiration for the vineyard came from Matthew’s experience tasting wine from a now-defunct label that hailed from the same subregion. That moment led them to purchase a nearby cherry orchard and transform it into the thriving vineyard that is now Mewstone.
In addition to their flagship Mewstone range, the Hughes brothers produce a second label, hughes + hughes. This range is made from carefully selected vineyards across Tasmania’s southern regions, including Coal River, Derwent, the North West, and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, showcasing the diversity and potential of Tasmanian terroir.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just beginning to explore, Mewstone and hughes + hughes offer a true taste of Tasmania’s unique wine landscape.
