‘MONTESEI’ SOAVE CLASSICO 2024
Bottle Shot
This wine comes from a blend of small south-facing vineyards in the Soave Classico area, from vines predominately between 70 & 90 years old. As with all the wines the grapes are farmed on steep terrace vineyards using Pergola’s, the traditional method of farming in Soave Classico. The soil type of the Montesei vineyard sites are a mix of porous volcanic rocks, lined with clay and silt.
The grapes specific to Montesei are always picked first due to the warmer south facing exposition of these sites. Hand picked, pressed and fermented in tank. No malolactic. Left on fine lees for 4 months. Of the three bottlings from Le Battistelle it’s the most instantly appealing, soft fruits with white floral notes but always the classic bitter almond style of Soave.
‘BATTISTELLE’ SOAVE CLASSICO 2023
Bottle Shot
From their revered single vineyard site called ‘Le Batistelle’ situated in the Brognoligo Cru. When tasting this wine it’s very much the ‘Chablis’ of the three wines, arguably not a ’Soave for everyone’ due to it’s minerality however we love this bottling. This comes from it’s very specific terrior. The vineyard is full of Basalt, a heavy volcanic rock which is the predominant soil in this spot, difficult to grow in.
Steeped, terraced vineyard, a labour of love for sure. Some of the vines on this special site are up to 100 years old. The vines are grown to the traditional Veronese pergola method, on dry-stone wall terraces as depicted on the label of this wine.
Hand-harvested then fermentation takes place in tank for about 20 days. The wine is left to develop on the fine lees with frequent batonnage for up to 12 months in stainless steel tanks. No Malolactic.
Designated as Heroic viticulture due to the huge work required to build and maintain the stone terraces on these steep slopes.
‘ROCCOLO DEL DURLO’ SOAVE CLASSICO 2023
Bottle shot
This single vineyard is situated in the Carbonare Cru, one of the most famous sites in the Classico zone. This vineyard contains so many old vines, up to 140 years old, a truly special plot. Unlike the Battistelle bottling from the Brognoligo Cru this site has a mixture of soils, heavily volcanic but a mixture of Basaltic, Iron and Tuff (soft porous rock). In fact a lot of the rocks from this site are very brittle, so easily worn down to powder form.
In terms of winemaking this is the only wine from Le Battistelle that sees skin contact. After hand picking the grapes are destemmed, lightly crushed and left for 2 days on skins in tank at cool temperatures. Then pressed off, left on fine lees in tank for up to 12 months with frequent battonage.
Designated as Heroic viticulture due to the huge work required to build and maintain the stone terraces on these steep slopes.
