‘GINESTRA’ ETNA BIANCO 2024
Bottle Shot
Carricante grown in Milo, Versante Est (eastern slope), in the Volpari Contrada (cru). 40-year-old vines planted on pure volcanic, mineral-rich soils with a fair sand content, at around 850 metres above sea level. The vines are trained using the traditional alberello (bush vine) system.
Hand-harvested, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, where the wine rests for 8 months on its fine lees. A fantastic, thrilling example of mineral-driven Carricante from Milo.
A blend of Nerello Mascalese (80%) and Nerello Cappuccio (20%) from the Versante Nord contrade of Arcuria and Feudo di Mezzo. Young bush vines (up to 30 years old) grow on volcanic, mineral-rich, stony soils. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. After a few months in seasoned barrels, the wine completes its élevage in tank.
This is outstanding value for money, a wine that carries all the typicity and character of Nerello Mascalese grown on lava soils.
FEUDO DI MEZZO ROSSO 2020
Bottle Shot
Single vineyard, 70 to 90 years old bush vines in the stunning Feudo di Mezzo contrada in Passopisciaro, Versante Nord at 650 metres altitude.
Nerello Mascalese (90%) and Cappuccio, coplanted.
The Calcagno plot sits in a dagala: a fertile island of green surrounded by an old lava flow. Due to the different altitudes of the plot, the Calcagno brothers had to create terraces to work around the ancient lava stream.
The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and co-fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The élevage happens in 20 hectoliters big botti for 12 months, followed by a long period of resting in glass. This wine was our favourite whilst tasting with the Calcagno family in Passopisciaro in April 2025.
