BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE ‘LES PIERRES’ 2020
Bottle Shot

Tasting the 2020 with Nathalie from bottle in March 2024 at the domaine I was surprised to see how ‘fresh’ this wine is from such a warm vintage. She commented that the 2020 summer was so hot that they expected lower acidity but in fact it had the grapes had very good balance.

Les Pierres (the stones) is a lieu dit that lies in the Bourgogne AOP section of Chassagne, just 250 meters from the vineyard of Chateau de Chassagne Montrachet. Vines are approximately 15 years old. Nathalie was keen to get across that this wine is 100% fermented in barrel, which is typical now of many of the top Domaine’s producing Aligote. They own a very small plot within this lieu dit of 0.26 hectares, producing around 1500 bottles per year vintage dependant.

Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed to tank. Left to settle overnight. Racked off gross lees to barrel. All seasoned oak. Wild fermented followed by malolactic. Left on fine lees for 10 months.

CHATEAU DE CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET BLANC 2021

“A difficult year for the wine grower because of the frost in April and then a summer that was so so fresh but as a consequence very low yields” – Nathalie describing the 2021. No question when tasting the 2021 vs the 2020 it’s a very ‘classic style’ vs the richer vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. More acidity, fresher, considerably more floral tones in the 2021 vs the 2020.

3 Hectares of the total 5 hectares Bader Mimeur own of the Chateau de Chassagne Montrachet vineyard is planted with Chardonnay. On the map of Chassagne it’s labelled at ‘Champ Derriere’, referencing the ‘land behind’ the Chateau and very much the heart of the estate.

Nathalie describes the soil as Argile + Limestone. The site itself is fairly flat with deep soils in fact she mentions one of the best parts of the location of the vineyard is the ‘natural’ irrigation that occurs when the rain naturally flows off the higher sites on the slope and into their Domaine, very relevant given the recent warm/hot vintages in Burgundy. Average age of the vineyard is 25-30 years old.

Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed to tank. Left to settle overnight. Racked off gross lees to barrel, of which 20% is new. Wild fermented followed by malolactic. Left on fine lees for 12 months, battonage happens but frequency dependant on vintage. Moved to tank for another 4 months before bottling.

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET BLANC ‘EN JOURNOBLOT’ 2019
Bottle Shot

Nathalie considers En Journoblot to be their best terrior. The lieu borders with the Grand Cru of Criot Batard Montrachet and in the top left corner just 15 meters from Batard Montrachet. Different soil to her other plots, a lot of more limestone closer to the surface due to the slope/shallow soil. South facing slope, full sun exposure. 0.4 Hectares planted, average age of 45 years old. She comments that this site always produces very small berries due to the terrior.

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET BLANC ‘LES HOUILLERES’ 2018

Nathalie on Les Houilleries 2018 – “It was a very sunny vintage. But the winter before we had a lot of rain. So in the in the soil we had the luxury of a lot of water so finally we had a very generous vintage. Very, like fruity, aromatic, maybe less acidity. That’s why some people say “Oh 18 is not the best vintage because maybe it won’t be vintage to keep 20 years because you don’t have enough acidity” but I really like this vintage, very charming vintage round, so I think it’s good to drink now because now it’s six years now. A little bit less five, six years old is really starting to be at the peak this time”

The lieu dit of Les Houilleres sits on the border with the Puligny Montrachet AOP and just 150 meters from the Grand Cru of Batard Montrachet. 0.36 hectares of beautiful old vine Chardonnay, average age of 60 years old. Their section is the only one planted East to West. They use horses specifically for this vineyard for plowing, along with allowing grass to grow in the rows to encourage competition. They see so much more ‘life’ in the soil now each year due to the more gentle treatment vs using a tractor.
